What’s Up with the Dark Spots Down There?

Do you suffer with “dark spots” on your Private Face (female genitalia)?

Have you ever wondered why you have them, and others don’t?  Have you ever tried to scrub those areas away?  If your answer is yes, welcome to the hyperpigmentation club.  Hyperpigmentation, better known as “dark spots” occur when skin over produces melanin.  Melanin is the substance that gives the skin color.  Those with melanin-rich skin, i.e. black women are more suspectable to this skin discoloration.

There are processes that can trigger the development of dark spots.  Most people are aware of the most common culprit, the sun.  Unless you frequent nude beaches, the sun does not impact the darkening of the Private Face.  The other factors are hormones and inflammation/trauma.  Many women may notice a darkening of the intimate area during phases in life when the estrogen level is high, such as puberty, pregnancy, or even with taking birth control pills.  The most frustrating catalyst for dark spots is inflammation and trauma to the skin.  This can be seen with conditions like ingrown hairs.  Have you ever wondered why your inner thighs are darker than the rest of your leg?  Well, it’s hyperpigmentation caused by the friction of the legs rubbing together.

If you’re part of the hyperpigmentation club, you know that a dark spot can last for many months, and for some, many years.  So, let’s talk about ways to prevent this long-term problem.  First and foremost, stop picking bumps!  Picking a bump only causes more inflammation and potential spread of bacteria.  Instead, apply warm compresses to bumps like ingrown hairs.  Focus on preventing the underlying cause of the bumps.  Avoid skin care products that irritate the skin, like harsh scrubs.  Forget about hair removal techniques that cause trauma to the skin, such as shaving and waxing.  Using a daily moisturizer will decrease friction of the skin.  If you have skin conditions, such as acne or psoriasis prompt and consistent treatment will decrease the potential for dark spots.
